A Short Lesson About Safe Spaces, Echo Chambers, and Internet Collectivism...

When it comes to enforcing rules regarding free speech whether you want to enforce it or not, populism will almost always make your website an echo chamber.

If freedom of speech is enforced on a website whether it's a bulletin board or a social network, there's a slippery slope that occurs in many such cases. Free speech removes many limits of internet discussion so people can get away with things most sites don't allow nowadays, and if it is encouraged on that site, there will most certainly be a bunch of Stormfront /pol/ or Soyjak Party refugees spreading their doctrine for attention and for the sake of attempting to create an intimidating personality. These types will eventually flood the website and therefore that website will become a safe space for what they call Neo-Nazis.

However, if someone becomes a head of that site and witnesses the content that has overtaken it, they'll have to enforce a strict rule that would always read something along the lines of "FREEDOM = SLAVERY" and therefore enforce censorship rather than free speech. This leads to all the former extremists being eradicated from every page as their videos comments and accounts are deleted, and in return thousands of Tumblr and Bluesky refugees begin flooding the site with content that is just as extremist as what the former userbase uploaded. And no matter what you align yourself with outside the "far-left," you will always be permab& for the opinions you hold, even if they aren't that radical. Therefore the website becomes a safe space for Anarcho-Maoists.

Vidlii did the same thing at the start of last year: New moderator joins the site and enforces censorship laws, website becomes a safe space for the left rather than a safe space for the right, and therefore hardly a thing changes when it comes to safe spaces. Once a Stormfront haven, now a ResetEra haven. Same shit, different views.

"B-But sweetie??? Ummm like the moderator made the site better because muh social justice-

Don't get me started. At least I'm not like you, thinking Karl Marx's ideas would not result in a societal decay if implemented like Cold War China or Russia. Hell, had I been a Hegelian in terms of Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini, I would have the same belief as you but more in terms with isolationism rather than globalism. Either way, fighting extremism with extremism is not a smart move.

The difference is that since Nazism and Marxism are two distinct flavors of socialism, people who hold beliefs of each will produce the same kind of echo chamber when they consume most of the site's traffic. Nazism makes the site a Stormhole, Marxism makes the site a Journalhole, and both are Socialist ideologies that have resulted in totalitarian regimes. But whether Nazism and Marxism is moderate or not all depends on what people believe, whether they've supported the ideologies so much they've grown to ignore the extremism, or they just never side with it because they know how radical they are.

In the end, making a website a safe space or an echo chamber is a threat to net neutrality, and even free speech as a whole. It's simply collectivism, and it's harmful to individualism.
